Chair Leadership

Prof. Herrmann has held the chair since 2017 and conducts research primarily on Privacy-Enhancing Technologies, Usable Security, and digital education. He publishes at top international venues such as CHI, USENIX Security, and PETS. He is the spokesperson for the University of Bamberg’s CIO and Dean of the WIAI Faculty (Oct. 2025 to Sept. 2027). Academic Career
Professorship (since 2017): Since October 2017, Professor of Privacy and Security in Information Systems at the University of Bamberg. Previously postdoc in the “Security in Distributed Systems” research group at the University of Hamburg. Between October 2015 and March 2017, interim professorship for Information Security and Privacy at the University of Siegen.
Doctorate and Awards: PhD in Computer Science in 2014 at the University of Hamburg. The dissertation on privacy issues in the Domain Name System was awarded the Dissertation Prize of the German Informatics Society (GI) for the best computer science dissertation in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the GI/CAST Dissertation Prize for Information Security, and the Research Prize of the GDD e.V. In 2014, appointed as Junior Fellow of the German Informatics Society. Best Teaching Award 2016 of Faculty III at the University of Siegen.
Early Career: Member of the “Security in Distributed Systems” research group at the University of Hamburg since 2011. Previously at the University of Regensburg as research associate at the Chair of Information Security Management since 2008. Study program coordinator at the Faculty of Business Administration, Economics, and Information Systems.
Studies: Studies in Information Systems at the University of Regensburg (2002-2008). In 2006, ERASMUS exchange program at University College Dublin, Ireland. Diploma with distinction from the University of Regensburg and the Elite Network Bavaria in 2008. Scholarships from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, the Röchling Foundation, and the Free State of Bavaria (BayBFG).

Nuremberg (NUE): 50km away, approx. 90 min. travel time Subway to Nuremberg Central Station, then regional train or S-Bahn to Bamberg
Munich (MUC): S-Bahn to Munich Central Station (40 min.), then direct train connection to Bamberg Total travel time: 2h 45min - 3h 30min
Frankfurt (FRA): Hourly connections via Würzburg, approx. 2.5 hours

By Car
From the A70, take the Bamberg-Hafen exit. Drive on B26 towards Bischberg/Trabelsdorf for about 1 km. Take the Gaustadt/Bischberg-Ost exit. Turn left onto Gaustädter Hauptstraße towards Bamberg/Gaustadt. After about 2 km, turn left over the small bridge onto the street “An der Spinnerei”.
